MHS Licensing Fees

Monographs & Scholarly Journals:

Monographs include all non-textbook publications, whether edited or single-author works, published by non-profit, University, or commercial presses. Journals include all peer-reviewed serial publications.

For both monographs and journals, if e-book/e-journal rights are sought an additional $10.00 fee per image will be added to the licensing costs. E-book and e-journal rights cover the right to reproduce the image embedded within the work in any digital format (e.g. e-book, PDF, online presentation of a journal article).

Electronic Publications:

Electronic publications includes e-books and e-journals with no planned print run, PDF documents made available for download, and other electronic file formats excepting Web publication (see Website/Online use below [link]).

*MultiMedia Bundle includes print and e-book licensing, as well as the rights to include the image licensed in any ancillary digital media materials (CD-ROM, DVD, Web-based units, etc.) and promotional materials for the specific product being licensed for the current edition of the work only. Additional permission must be obtained for use of the image in all future editions of the work, for general advertising, or any further uses.

Ephemera:

Ephemera include posters, brochures, pamphlets, handouts, and other print materials of a less permanent nature than monographs, journals, magazines, or newsletters.

Exhibitions:

For exhibitions that will be open for less than two years, the Massachusetts Historical Society waives all licensing fees. For exhibitions lasting over two years in duration, the following one-time fees are assessed:

Exhibition licensing applies to all uses of the image within the exhibition.  Permission does not extend to use in advertising materials, distributable catalogs, or audio visual presentations unless those uses are requested, at which point additional fees may apply.

 Advertising:

Use of Massachusetts Historical Society materials in commercial and non-profit advertising is licensed on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the nature of the project, a fee will be negotiated within the following ranges:

Website/Online:

 This licensing category is used for Web-accessible databases, social networking sites, personal and professional Web pages, institutional Websites, and any other online platform excluding online textbook components, Web video, and downloadable e-books and/or PDFs which have their own fee scales (see Electronic Publications above [link]).

Film and Television:

This licensing category is used for any audio-visual production which will be produced and disseminated via public showings (including in exhibitions), online, broadcast television, or DVD/video sales. The following fees apply:

The Massachusetts Historical Society grants television and film producers the following rights when licensing images: Worldwide broadcast standard and non-standard television, audio visual DVD/Home Video, and Internet, excluding packaging and advertising, for the life of the project.

If packaging and advertising rights are desired, Cover Art and/or Advertising fees may apply.

Exempt Categories

Use of MHS images exempt from licensing fees include:

  • Theses, dissertations, and other academic assignments that will not be widely distributed
  • PowerPoint presentations, slideshows, & lectures
  • Approved press requests. All press requests should be directed to the Assistant Director of Development for Communications for assessment and processing.
  • Use of images from the MHS website on personal webpages and blogs

In all cases, the credit line “Courtesy of the Massachusetts Historical Society” should appear with the images. If the image was obtained from our website, a hyperlink to the origin of the image should be included where appropriate.

Use permission letters for the above categories will be provided upon request.
