Departments at the MHS Adams Papers The Adams Papers project was founded in 1954 to prepare a comprehensive published edition of the manuscripts written and received by the family of John Adams of Quincy, Massachusetts. The Adams Papers Collection at the Massachusetts Historical Society forms the nucleus of the project. Administration The administrative department of the MHS includes the Director's office, Information Systems, Building Operations, Membership, and Development. Education & Public Programs The MHS hosts lectures, book signings, discussion series, and other special programs to which our members and the general public are cordially invited. In addition, the Society sponsors two fellowship programs for K-12 educators and offers seminars, workshops, online curricula, and other resources to teacher and students. Library The library of the Massachusetts Historical Society serves primarily as a repository for collections of the personal papers of individuals and families who lived in Massachusetts. It is open to the public without charge. Researchers are encouraged to contact the reference librarian before planning a visit. Publications For over two hundred years the Massachusetts Historical Society has been publishing in the field of American history. Its publications have served two purposes, both based on Jeremy Belknap's original vision: preservation of the historical documents in the Society's collections and communication of historical knowledge to the citizens of the nation. Research The Research Department is responsible for outreach to the scholarly community. Its programs include seminars, conferences, brown bag lunches, and research fellowships. The department also edits the Society's periodical, the Massachusetts Historical Review, and oversees research-related special projects. |
