On 15 April 1815, John Quincy Adams' two eldest sons embarked on
the ship New Packet to join their parents and younger brother
in Europe. While their father served as minister plenipotentiary
to Russia (1809-1814) and negotiated the Treaty of Ghent with Great
Britain (1814), George Washington Adams and John Adams 2d had remained
in America under the care of their grandparents and extended family.
The family would soon be reunited in London, where John Quincy Adams
assumed the post of minister plenipotentiary to Great Britain. In
this letter to his grandsons John Adams offers advice and, in true
Adams fashion, encourages the boys to record and preserve their
many experiences.
