New England Womens Diaries Project The New England Women's Diaries Project is a joint venture of the Massachusetts Historical Society and Northeastern University Press.
Primary among the goals of the Project is the publication of a series of volumes selected from more than 200 women's journals archived at the MHS. Ranging in date from 1751 to the 1970s, these texts document the lives of women who lived and traveled across North America and around the world. While many came from extraordinary backgrounds and pursued extraordinary careers, most of these women recorded experiences characteristic of life in their eras and classes. Most of the diarists described life at or close to the center of Boston society, but some provide a rare glimpse of their work as farmwives and serving women. Still others left records of their professional endeavors as artists, activists, and teachers. Designed for an audience of lay readers as well as scholars, these paperback volumes provide rich source documents for classrooms from high school through graduate school. Each includes material to support and contextualize the "story" told in the diary, such as annotations, an introductory essay, illustrations, and a biographical key. The style of presentation aims to keep these elements visually and substantially accessible to the widest possible audience. An editorial review process assures quality of transcription and contextual material.
