He served as the treasurer of the Champion Iron Co. of Michigan in Boston from 1882-1903 and had homes in Cambridge, Mass. and Fisher's Island, N.Y.

Stone married Katharine Maria Fay (1849-1928), the daughter of Charles Fay, in 1871. They had four children: Pauline Fay Stone Jackson (1874-1961), Reginald Stone (1877-1892), Amy Fay Stone (b. 1884), and Margaret Gerrad Stone Wright (b. 1886).

Jackson family

Arthur Loring Jackson (1874-1924) was one of four children of prominent textile manufacturer Patrick Tracy Jackson (1844-1918) and Eleanor Baker Bray Jackson (b. 1847). Following his marriage on December 10, 1902 to Pauline Fay Stone, he and his new wife moved to Bolivia where he pursued a career in the buying of rubber for the Chicago-Bolivian Rubber Co. and the Andes Trading Co. until their return to the United States in 1909.

They had two daughters: Elizabeth (Elsie) Gray Jackson Edson (b. 1913) and Pauline Rosamond (Posie) Jackson Harris (1910-1986).

Elsie married George Edson; Posie married J. Dexter Harris.

Detailed Description of the Collection

The Stone-Jackson family papers, housed in 7 record cartons, center around the marriage of Pauline Fay Stone and Arthur Loring Jackson, their respective families, and their children. The collection has been arranged into two series: I. Stone family correspondence and II. Jackson family correspondence.

I. Stone family correspondence, 1819-1947

This series contains primarily family correspondence between Pauline Fay Stone, after 1903 Mrs. Arthur Loring Jackson, and various members of her family. The letters, written both before and after her marriage, center on the relationship between her and her mother, Katharine Fay Stone, but also include letters between her and her father, William E. Stone, and correspondence with his sisters, Amy Fay Stone and Margaret Gerrad Stone (later Mrs. Austin T. Wright). This series of correspondence spans from 1881-1947.

Because Pauline and Arthur Jackson were living in Bolivia from 1903-1909, many of the letters to her family include descriptions of life there. Several of Pauline's letters from Bolivia also include typescript copies. Letters from Pauline's parents were written from several locations, among them Cambridge and Boston, Mass., Paris, and Fisher's Island, N.Y.

This series also contains some earlier Stone and Fay correspondence (Carton 1) dating from 1819-1888, including letters to Dr. Ebenezer Stone; and letters to Katherine Maria Fay (later Stone) from her father, Charles Fay.

II. Jackson family correspondence, 1898-1954

This series is broken up into two smaller sections. The first is the correspondence from Arthur Loring Jackson home to his family, primarily from Bolivia, and date from 1898-1904.

It also includes letters between Arthur and Pauline Jackson dating from 1898-1923. There is an extensive series of courtship letters dating from 1898 until their marriage in 1902. Some of these letters contain hits and allusions to pre-marital sexual encounters between the two.

The Jackson family correspondence later contains letters from the Jackson children, Elsie and Rosamond (Posie) Jackson, to their mother Pauline. These letters, most of which were from Elsie, date from 1929-1954. A few other miscellaneous items in this section include two small booklets containing lists of callers of Pauline, 1893-1895; her personal account book, noting in particular food purchases, for 1905; and a notebook of hers for 1906; photographs; and a few printed items.

The second section of this correspondence (Carton 7) contains letters to Pauline Jackson from various friends, 1898-1909.
