Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of notes, correspondence, clippings, photographs and other professional papers kept by Mason Sears of Dedham, Mass. during his travels to Africa on behalf of the United Nation Trusteeship Council, 1953-71. Also includes typescripts, revisions, proofs, notes and photographs for Sears' book entitled Years of High Purpose published in 1980; and papers related to his political career in Massachusetts, 1949-52.

Biographical Sketch

Mason Sears was appointed United States representative to the United Nations Trusteeship Council by President Eisenhower in 1953. He continued to visit Africa through the fifties and sixties in a variety of capacities with the UN. He wrote the book Years of High Purpose: from Trusteeship to Nationhood (University Press of America, 1981). Prior to that he had graduated from Harvard, served in the both world wars, the state department, and the Massachusetts State Legislature.
