Biographical Sketch

Allen French (1870-1946) was born in Boston, Mass., the son of John James and Frances Maria Stratton French. After graduating from Boston English High School, French attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Berlin before receiving his B.A. from Harvard University in 1894. French was a prolific author, best known for his works on the battles of Lexington and Concord and the American Revolution. French settled in Concord, Mass., where he married Ellen Richmond Dorrance (1871-1918) in 1898. Allen and Ellen French had three daughters: Maude (1900-1985), Frances (1902-1978), and Ellen (1908-2000). Four years after Ellen's death in 1918, he married Aletta Lillibridge (1883-1962) of New York. Allen and Aletta shared a love of history and traveled widely in Europe and the United States.

Collection Description

The Allen French travel photograph albums comprise 17 volumes of black and white snapshots taken by Allen French and other members of his family during trips through Europe, Canada, and the United States between 1925 and 1941. Allen and his wife Aletta Lillibridge French traveled widely in England and across the continent, often accompanied by one or more of their daughters. The photographs provide a glimpse of Europe between the two world wars and depict local characters and scenery, life aboard ship during transatlantic crossings, and French's family and friends. After 1938, the albums depict cross-country automobile trips taken by the Frenches, as well as automobile trips to Canada. Most of the photographs are identified in Allen French's hand. The albums have been given sequential numbers, but the original numbering used by French has been included in the description of each volume, indicating gaps that exist in the collection.
