Biographical Sketch
Historian Frances Wheeler Gregory (1912-1998) was the daughter of Richard Harrington Gregory (1876-1954), originally of Princeton, Mass., and Annah Sayre Wheeler (1875-1943) of Rutland, Vermont. A graduate of Sweet Briar College in 1936, she received her Ph.D. from Radcliffe College in 1949. Dr. Gregory went on to join the faculty of Westhampton College of the University of Richmond (Va.) and in 1975 published Nathan Appleton: Merchant and Entrepreneur. A member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Dr. Gregory died in Richmond, Va. in 1998.
Collection Description
Photographs depicting ancestors of historian Frances Wheeler Gregory, including members of the Skinner, Howe, Gregory, Wheeler, Sayre, Bennett, and Fitch families. The collection also includes photographs of family homes in Rutland, Vt.; Horseheads, N.Y.; and Princeton, Mass.; and a sample card of 18 views of Mt. Wachusett taken by photographer Thomas Lewis of Cambridge, Mass. The collection includes cartes de visite, cabinet photographs, and other paper-based photographs.
