On 5 August 1862, Capt. Richard Goodwin informed his mother that he was unfit for duty. Although medical opinion confirmed that he should resign from his commission he told her that he "would rather die out here first." Four days later, unable to walk without assistance, Goodwin was killed in action at Cedar Mountain.
