Although he served in a New York regiment, Francis Channing Barlow (1834-1896) had been brought up at Brook Farm, the utopian community in West Roxbury, Mass., and educated at Harvard. He was intimately familiar with the socially-elite, well-educated officers of the 2nd and 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiments, many of whom were his friends.
