The white man depicted with the Chippewa man in this photograph is unidentified on the carte de visite. It is possible that he is the photographer, Charles DeForest Fredricks; the manner in which he holds one hand out of the frame suggests that he holds a cord to his camera that would have allowed him to take the photograph and include himself within the shot. A handwritten note on the verso of the image identifies it as having been taken in Washington, D.C. in 1862.
