Washwoman Davis

Washwoman Davis Patriotic cover
Image 1 of 1

This patriotic cover (envelope featuring images and slogans) was printed during the Civil War to promote the antislavery cause and depicts a white woman hanging out laundry, each piece marked with the name of a southern state. Surrounded by fleeing African Americans, she remarks "Lor' bless my soul, how these blacks are flying! they'll dirty all my clothes."
