In 1878, William Lloyd Garrison met the sculptor Anne Whitney and sat for a portrait bust. Previous portraits had disappointed him, but he was capitvated by Whitney. This is one of two sculptures of Garrison completed by Whitney owned by the MHS; the second being recently given by John Ritchie Garrison in 2012.
