Letter from John Adams to Abigail Adams, 9 December 1795

Philadelphia Decr 9. 1795

My dearest Friend

Before the Post departs I have only time to tell you that I arrived here last night at nine O Clock in good health. A storm the night before last Spoiled the Roads and made the Journey disagreable from N York.

I Spent two nights and one day and a half with our Children very pleasantly.

Mr. Tazewell had been made President and the Speech had been delivered. A fair Picture of our Prosperity but I could Sketch another with more shades.

I believe however from the Complexion of Men and Things that Government will be Supported and respected.

I had a curious Ride from N. York, with a curious Company. They all treated me with more Respect, than they did any Thing else.

I am yours as ever
J. A.
