International Conference on the History of Records and Archives

The Third International Conference on the History of Records and Archives (I-CHORA 3) will be held at the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston, Massachusetts on September 27-29, 2007. The theme of the conference will be the history of personal records and personal recordkeeping practices. This theme is intended to cover the full range of personal documents—letters, diaries, journals, and scrapbooks—both as document types and as parts of recordkeeping systems that document personal life. Eric Ketelaar, Professor of Archivistics at the University of Amsterdam, will open the conference with a keynote address entitled, "The Genealogical Gaze: The Dawn of Archives as Cultural Patrimony." Other session themes include inventing and re-inventing a life; forms and genres of personal record making and record keeping; preserving collective memory and identity; personal records and original order; description and documentation; and legal and ethical issues associated with personal papers.
