Collection Description

The records of Second Church (Boston, Mass.) consist of 111 cased volumes, 43 boxes, and 1 oversize box. The collection has been organized into fourteen series: Church Records, Treasurer's Records, Proprietors' Records, Committee Records, Legal Records, Records of Church Clubs and Organizations, Ministers' Papers, Records of the Church Historian, Calendars/Newsletters, Scrapbooks, Printed Materials, New Brick Church Records, Freeman Place Chapel Records, and Church of the Savior Records. Many of the series have been subdivided into bound volumes and loose papers.

The types of records to be found in the collection include, but are not limited to, the following: early record books; member lists; vital statistics, including baptism, church admission, marriage, dismissal, funeral, and death records; accounts; receipts; checks; poor records; memorial fund records; correspondence; pew accounts; pew deeds; committee reports; meeting minutes and summaries; annual reports; proxies; charters; land deeds; insurance policies; building plans; charitable records; library records; Sunday school records; sermons; weekly calendars and newsletters; scrapbooks; clippings; newspapers; programs; guides; and pamphlets.

The Church Records series contains the earliest volume of church records, a list of members, 1650-1741, kept by Cotton Mather.

The General Accounts subseries contains a 1774 account by Samuel Ridgway, a member of Second Church, who tallies in detail his losses, "since the Port of Boston was Shut up in June 1774" by British troops. Among the losses listed are "Sundrys stolen out of my Shop and Store in the Siege Suppose by the Regulars," "one Dwelling House Two Rooms on a Floor and Two Stories high," and the cost of "removing my Goods and family out of Boston and Back again."

The Records of Church Clubs and Organizations series contains records concerning the charitable groups and activities of the church. Charitable groups include the Benevolent Fraternity of Churches, the Board of Charity, the Boston Quarterly Charity Lecture, the Ladies Benevolent Society, and the Second Church Club.

The Ministers' Papers series contains a letter from Samuel Mather, Second Church's fifth minister, to the "Committee" of the church, defending himself against "the Aspersions unjustly cast on me," which led to his dismissal, ca. 1741.

The Ministers' Papers series also contains documents relating to the ministry of Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1829-1832, including correspondence, reports, and printed materials documenting his ordination. Correspondence includes his letter accepting the position of junior pastor at Second Church, 1829, and his letter of resignation, 1832. Also included is a manuscript copy of the original text of his speech on the Lord's supper, Sep. 1832, that led to his resignation.

Standing Committee, Proprietors', Building Committee, and Freeman Place Chapel records document a long-running controversy concerning Second Church buildings, 1844-1850. The construction of a new church on the site of the old New Brick Church on Hanover Street in 1845 caused many members to leave the church, the society to plunge into debt, and internal conflict to arise, instigating the resignation of Rev. Chandler Robbins. The sale of the new building on Hanover St. and the purchase of Freeman Place Chapel resolved the conflict and prompted Robbins to remain as pastor. Of particular interest is Robbins' letter of resignation, 21 June 1848, in Proprietors' loose papers.

The collection also contains records of New Brick Church and Church of the Savior, both of which were absorbed by Second Church. These records include accounts, proprietors' and standing committee records, vital statistics, pew accounts and deeds, and ministers' papers.

Volume designations (numbers and some letters) assigned prior to processing reflect the original physical order of volumes and have been preserved. In the box list (below), the volumes are listed chronologically within each series, but are arranged by volume number or letter on the shelves, with letters following numbers.

Original folio and box designations have been discarded and the materials have been integrated into the new series arrangement. See the legacy shelf order list for a list of volumes, folios, and boxes as they were organized prior to processing, which also reflects the current physical arrangement of volumes and the new locations of folios and boxes.

I. Church Records, 1650-1970
Church records document membership, early church meetings and business, and vital church functions, such as baptisms and marriages, and consist of both bound volumes and loose papers. The bulk of these records are in bound volumes, 1650-1970, including early record books; early accounts; member lists; meeting minutes and summaries; and records of baptisms, admissions, marriages, and deaths. Loose papers, 1666-1966, include member lists, christening and baptism records, and two index card files of members, deceased members, addresses, and various topics. Loose papers also contain the records of wedding and funeral records that were removed from church historian files. Most of the marriages documented by these records were conducted at Second Church, but some were conducted elsewhere by Second Church ministers. See also records of the church historian for papers relating to membership requirements.

II. Treasurer's Records, 1711-1968
It was the responsibility of the treasurer to pay bills and taxes assessed to the corporation, receive rents, and issue receipts. The treasurer was required to keep accounts for each proprietor of pews. The treasurer executed and signed the deeds of the pews, kept a register of deeds of pews, and sold at public auction pews for which taxes equal to the sum for the whole year had not been paid.
Treasurer's records include both bound and loose general accounts, 1711-1968, pew accounts, 1755-1918, and pew deeds, 1795-1871.
A. General Accounts, 1711-1968
General accounts include both bound volumes and loose papers. Bound volumes, 1711-1968, include account books, receipt books, treasurer's correspondence, poor fund records, some pew accounts, and memorial fund records. Loose papers, 1718-1964, include accounts, receipts, treasurer's correspondence, checks, and treasurer's annual reports. With the exception of checks and annual reports, all loose general accounts items have been interfiled in one chronological sequence.
General accounts include documentation of Second Church's payments for a variety of goods and services, including printing, singing, taxes, foodstuffs, coal, and utilities. Building maintenance and repairs were constant expenses, and the costs of new construction dominate the records in the years surrounding the construction of new churches in 1845 and 1874.

III. Proprietors' Records, 1719-1955
In the "Act of Incorporation" (1825), the Proprietors of Pews were formally recognized as an association--the Second Church--and given the right to hold and acquire real estate, make rules and by-laws, choose officers, and raise money for the church and its edifice. Every proprietor was entitled to one vote for each pew he owned. An annual meeting was held in April throughout the nineteenth century, and annually in January later in the twentieth century. Proprietors established the tariff of taxes based on a rate on the relative value of the pews.
Proprietors' records include both bound volumes and loose papers. Bound volumes, 1719-1942, include records, minutes, and reports (from bodies including the Standing Committee, Sunday School, Board of Investment, and Benevolent Society). Loose papers, 1822-1955, include records, some committee reports (most are filed elsewhere by committee) and correspondence, and annual meeting minutes and records. XIII. Freeman Place Chapel Records, 1848-1854
After building a new church on Hanover Street that was dedicated in 1845, Second Church fell into serious debt. In order to repair the congregation's finances and mend a deepening rift in the congregation, the church on Hanover Street was sold in 1849. In its stead, Second Church purchased the Freeman Place Chapel in the same year. Freeman Place Chapel was itself sold in 1854 as Second Church merged with the Church of the Savior and moved into the latter's building. Records include one volume of minutes for the Friends of Rev. Chandler Robbins (the Second Church group responsible for organizing the purchase of Freeman Place Chapel), as well as loose correspondence, reports, and a plan of Freeman Place Chapel.

XIV. Church of the Savior Records, 1845-1860

Loose papers include accounts, subscriber receipts, and building records that include correspondence, estimates, and other papers relating to the planning for and cost of constructing the Church of the Savior Chapel on Bedford St.
