Ellery Sedgwick, 1872-1960
Ellery Sedgwick was born February 27, 1872 in New York City, to Henry Dwight
and Henrietta (Ellery) Sedgwick. Sedgwick's ancestors, a leading family of
Stockbridge, Massachusetts, established a tradition of literary achievement,
including authors Catherine Maria Sedgwick and Henry Dwight Sedgwick.
Sedgwick attended the Groton School of Massachusetts, from which he
graduated in 1890, and Harvard University. Upon graduation from Harvard's Class
of 1894, Sedgwick returned to Groton to teach classics for two years. He left
the school in 1896 to accept a position as assistant editor at
Youth's Companion. In 1900 Sedgwick took over
editorship of Leslie's Monthly Magazine, a
position he held for four years. He later worked for one year at
McClure's Magazine, and in 1908 for D. Appleton
and Company.
Sedgwick began his career with the Atlantic
Monthly in 1908, when he purchased the magazine from Houghton-Mifflin.
At that time, the monthly circulation was 15,000 and the magazine ran an annual
deficit of $5000. Sedgwick worked quickly to reverse the trend, and by 1928, he
had increased circulation to 137,000. He as been credited with discovering many
writers, and with being the first American publisher to print the works of
Ernest Hemingway. Sedgwick resigned as editor in 1938, and sold the magazine in
1939.
He was recognized for his editorial skills by three academic institutions.
Tufts University and Dartmouth College awarded Sedgwick the Litt.D. in 1920 and
1921, and he received the LhD. from Syracuse University.
Sedgwick wrote his memoirs, The Happy
Profession, in 1946, and in 1947 published a compilation of his
favorite pieces published by Atlantic Monthly,
titled Atlantic Harvest. He also edited
Novel and Story: A Book of Modern Readings, with
Harry A. Domincovich, which was published in 1939.
His professional activities were not limited to editing. In 1918 he became
Vice-President and part-owner of the Rumford Press, an affiliation he
maintained through the 1940s. He also maintained ties to Groton and Harvard as
a Trustee. He served as trustee of the Boston Public Library as well.
Sedgwick married Mabel Cabot in 1904. They had four children: Ellery, Cabot,
Theodora, and Henrietta. Mabel Sedgwick died in 1937. That difficult period was
compounded for Sedgwick by troubles with his own health. Sciatica made him
bed-ridden for a few months in 1938-1939, and he was also plagued with
arthritis. He remarried in 1939, to an Englishwoman, [Isabel] Marjorie Russell.
He died April 21, 1960 in Washington, D.C.
The Ellery Sedgwick Papers document Sedgwick's professional career as
editor of the Atlantic Monthly magazine from
1908 through his retirement in 1938, and until his death in 1960. The
collection also documents his personal and varied non-Atlantic Monthly relationships during this time period.
His correspondence include relatives, literary figures, politicians, and fellow
Harvard alumni.
The collection is housed in 24 record cartons (stored offsite) and one
oversize box (remaining onsite). Sedgwick's records concern items published in
the Atlantic Monthly, and consists mainly of
correspondence, office files on authors, notes, manuscripts in various forms
(notes, drafts, proofs and reprints), royalty statements, stockholders'
records, Sedgwick's (and his staff's) carbon letters and replies, clippings,
and printed materials. [For more detailed description of the contents and
arrangement of these records, see the series descriptions and index.]
The organizational nature of these records is loosely based on what is
assumed to be Sedgwick's original working arrangement. However, several moves
and the integration of materials as they arrived at the Massachusetts
Historical Society have made it impossible to restore or retain original
order.
The records are arranged in five series: Atlantic
Monthly General Files, Atlantic Monthly
Special Subject Files, Personal Files, Professional Affiliations, and
Publications. More than one half of the collection consists of
Atlantic Monthly files, records of Sedgwick's
correspondence and relationships with contributors to the
Atlantic Monthly during his editorship. In
addition, a series was created for four significant experiences, identified as
Atlantic Monthly Special Subject Files. These
include records relating to controversies caused by the writings of two young
women, Wilma Francis Minor and Opal Whiteley; the debate regarding Al Smith's
candidate for the presidential nomination; and correspondence and reaction to
Sedgwick's writings on the Spanish Civil War and his trip to Spain in 1938.
The Personal Files contain correspondence and papers not directly related
to the Atlantic Monthly, and include family
correspondence. The series Professional Affiliations contains Sedgwick's
records as Trustee/Overseer of the Arnold Arboretum, Boston Public Library, and
Harvard University, and as vice-president and part-owner of the Rumford Press.
The Publication series include correspondence, notes, and newspaper clippings
related to Sedgwick's two books: The Happy
Profession and Atlantic Harvest.
The final part of this collection contains five boxes of photocopies (which
remain onsite) of some of the correspondence in the Atlantic Monthly General Files made prior to the
integration into the collection of the Ellery Sedgwick papers in the spring of
1989. An alphabetical list of photocopied correspondence may be found at the
end of this guide. However, because of the integration of more recent
acquisitions, original files should be checked for letters not included in the
initial copying process.
This guide contains two indexes: a selective index, by individual name and
institutional affiliation, to correspondence in all series except the
Atlantic Monthly General Files. The indexes
refer to box and folder numbers prior to the transfer of the collection to
record cartons for offsite storage. Because the files are arranged
alphabetically, the folder list for the Atlantic
Monthly General Files serves as a name index for the correspondence in
that series.
The Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) holds the following collections
related to the Ellery Sedgwick papers:

The Ellery Sedgwick papers are composed of professional and personal records
kept by Sedgwick as editor of the Atlantic
Monthly from approximately 1898 until his death in 1960, and includes
materials through 1969.
The first donation of his papers to the Massachusetts Historical Society
(MHS) was made by Mrs. Marjorie (Russell) Sedgwick in 1967 and consisted of
some Atlantic Monthly files, the Spanish Civil
War papers and Sedgwick's records as an Overseer of Harvard University. Family
letters and more general papers were donated by Mrs. Sedgwick in 1968, but the
bulk of the approximately 1,940 letters written to Sedgwick during his
editorship were acquired by the MHS. The Atlantic
Monthly Press added a box to the collection in 1987, with the remainder
of the material coming in small parcels between 1969 and 1989, the last after
the death of Segdwick's successor, Edward Weeks.
The Atlantic Monthly General Files were
processed as the Ellery Sedgwick papers and remained distinct from the
additional materials as they were donated to the MHS by Mrs. Sedgwick and the
Atlantic Monthly offices. The additions were
then processed as Ellery Sedgwick papers II, III, IV, V, Mrs. Sedgwick papers,
and Additions. All of these collections have been integrated into one
collection, moving the materials to their appropriate locations, mostly within
the Atlantic Monthly files.
The bulk of the Ellery Sedgwick papers (except photocopies and oversize) are
stored offsite and must be requested at least one business day in advance.

The Ellery Sedgwick papers contain letters written by 20th century literary
figures. The Massachusetts Historical Society does not
claim ownership to the literary rights (copyright) of letters and manuscripts
written by individuals other than Ellery Sedgwick in this collection.
The Massachusetts Historical Society cannot give permission to publish or cite
documents by individuals for whom it does not hold copyright. Use of the
collection does not imply permission to publish or
cite documents in the collection. It is the sole
responsibility of the researcher to obtain formal permission from the owners of
the literary rights (copyright) to publish or cite documents in this
collection.
Photocopies are for personal use only. Personal
use photocopies may not be donated or deposited in other libraries or archives,
or made available to other researchers without the written permission of the
Massachusetts Historical Society.

| | I. Atlantic Monthly General Files,
1908 - 1960
Arranged alphabetically. This series comprises the bulk of the Ellery Sedgwick Papers. The
materials, primarily correspondence, span 1908-1960, and concentrate during the
1920s and 1930s. This series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent, and
occasionally by institution or subject of correspondence. Each correspondent
has an individual folder (or folders). For this reason, the container list for
this series only will serve as an alphabetical index to the correspondents. A
selected correspondent index has been created for the other series in this
collection.
The contents of the files contain more than correspondence between Sedgwick
and the many authors he dealt with in his capacity as editor of the
Atlantic Monthly (1908-1939). Files contain
correspondence with authors, agents, and publishers, as well as pamphlets,
article reprints, and newspaper clippings. The correspondence of
Atlantic Monthly staff people with authors is
also included in these files. Staff members include: Mark A. DeWolfe Howe,
Edward A. Weeks, Teresa S. Fitzpatrick, MacGregor Jenkins, and Theodore
Morrison. These individuals are not indexed for this series because they serve
in an official capacity for the magazine. Correspondence from these individuals
in other capacities (personal, etc.) has been indexed.
The Atlantic Monthly General Files also
contain carbon copies of outgoing correspondence, most of which was generated
by Sedgwick. These have not been indexed.
A significant part of the collection is correspondence from
Atlantic Monthly readers, called "Comments."
These are found throughout the files, but are most prevalent for authors for
whom there are many folders or boxes (such as James Norman Hall, James Truslow
Adams, Edward A. Newton, and Albert J. Nock). The comments were separated from
author's correspondence and arranged alphabetically and by year at the end of
the file.
The subject of the letters in the General Files is uniformly the
publication of articles in the Atlantic Monthly.
Many folders are little more than a few letters presenting manuscripts.
However, there were many authors with whom Sedgwick developed personal
relationships, and/or whose works were frequently printed in the
Atlantic Monthly over a period of years.
Among the authors with whom Sedgwick had extensive correspondence are:
James Truslow Adams, Mary Antin, L. Adams Beck, Godfrey Rathbone Benson (Lord
Charnwood), Gamaliel Bradford, William H. Chamberlin, John Jay Chapman, W. Hans
Coudenhove, Mazo de la Roche, Walter D. Edmonds, Felix Frankfurter, Robert Dean
Frisbie, John Galsworthy, James Norman Hall, Charles Boardman Hawes, Hudson
Hoagland, Albert Kinross, Walter Lippman, Amy Lowell, William McFee, Margaret
Prescott Montague, Samuel Eliot Morrison, Edward A. Newton, Albert J. Nock,
Charles Nordhoff, Nora Waln Osland-Hill, Arthur Pound, Agnes Repplier, Hilda
Rose, Harrison W. Smith, Logan Pearsall Smith, Henry Williamson, Owen Wister,
and Hans Zinsser.
Other significant correspondents include: Pearl S. Buck, Winston S.
Churchill, John Foster Dulles, Rudyard Kipling, Henry Cabot Lodge, Archibald
MacLeish, Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Carl Sandburg, George
Santayana, William H. Taft, Rabindranath Tagore, Wendell L. Wilkie, and
Virginia Woolfe.

| | | II. Atlantic Monthly Special Subject
Files
Arranged by subject. The Atlantic Monthly Special Subject Files
contain four sub-series regarding incidents related to Sedgwick's editorship,
and which were extraordinary as per the nature of the Atlantic Monthly General Files.
Wilma Frances Minor and Opal Whiteley presented unusual material for
publication in the Atlantic Monthly. Sedgwick
supported their stories, the former regarding love letters of Abraham Lincoln
and the latter a childhood diary, despite the controversies they caused.
Two other controversial issues raised in the magazine were the Spanish Civil
War, of which Sedgwick's politics and subsequent stories he submitted made the
Atlantic a forum for debate on the merits of the
war, and Alfred E. Smith's candidature for nomination for the Presidency of the
U.S.
The nature of these sub-series and the varied materials contained therein
necessitated separation from the General Files.
|
| | | | A. Wilma Frances Minor,
1928-1960
Arranged chronologically. In 1928, Wilma Frances Minor, a television interviewer and writer from
California, presented to Sedgwick the opportunity to publish the story of a
love affair, based on original letters between Abraham Lincoln and Ann
Rutledge. Minor entrusted Sedgwick with the "original" love letters, from which
she planned to write a book which would be serialized in the
Atlantic Monthly. Upon publication of the first
serial, Lincolniana specialists protested the authenticity of the letters. Work
on the novel continued while Sedgwick contracted with California detective J.B.
Armstrong to research the case. Teresa S. Fitzpatrick of the
Atlantic Monthly staff was responsible for
supervising the investigation. The letters were proven by experts to be
forgeries, and in June 1929, Minor and her mother confessed to having created
them. Minor claimed her mother was a psychic and that the spirits of Abe and
Ann had commanded her to make their story known.
The sub-series is divided into three sections. Carton 13 contains Minor's
correspondence with Sedgwick and his staff, and their correspondence with many
people regarding the authenticity of the letters. Sedgwick retained the
forgeries, which are stored in Carton 13 along with drafts of Minor's
manuscript.
The correspondence and reports filed by Armstrong, and correspondence with
Paul Angle, president of the Lincoln Centennial Association, are arranged
alphabetically in Carton 13. Cartons 13 and 14 contain comments and inquiries
regarding the serials and Sedgwick's research to authenticate the letters, from
1928-1929. This correspondence is in alphabetical order by year. Carton 14 also
contains miscellaneous comments from 1949-1960 arranged alphabetically.
Correspondents of note include: Worthington Ford, Wayland A. Morrison, Ida
Tarbell, Charles T. and William A. White. There is also correspondence with
representatives from Rumford Press and Little, Brown & Co. regarding

| | | | B. Alfred E. Smith / Charles C. Marshall,
1926-1929
Arranged chronologically. This sub-series contains letters, newspaper clippings, and comments
regarding an open-letter debate between Alfred E. Smith and Charles C. Marshall
printed in the Atlantic Monthly in 1927.
There are six parts to this sub-series: General Correspondence, Charles C.
Marshall Correspondence, Alfred E. Smith Correspondence, Miscellaneous,
Publicity, and Comments, 1927-1928.
Charles C. Marshall, a New York attorney, wrote to Smith in 1927 challenging
Smith's candidacy as a Democratic nominee for President of the U.S. Marshall
charged that Smith, a Catholic, would have a conflict of interest which would
impede his ability to fulfill the oath of office. Marshall's letter was printed
by the Atlantic Monthly, which then became a
forum for the controversy raised over a Roman Catholic running for President.
(Non-Catholics feared that a Catholic in office would allow the Pope influence
over U.S. government policies).
Among notable correspondents on this issue were: Bernard M. Baruch, Felix
Frankfurter, Edmund F. Gibbons (the Bishop of Albany), Christian A. Herter,
Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lillian D. Wald.

interest in the Spanish Civil War, his trip to meet with General Francisco
Franco in 1937, and articles written on the war.
The correspondence is divided into seven parts. Separate chronological files
exist for Juan de Cardenas, the Spanish Consul; Winthrop Carter, whose son was
missing in Spain in 1938; and the Marquis del Moral. There are folders of
general correspondence and folders containing material relating to trip
arrangements.
Comments about Sedgwick's politics and his articles were divided into pros
and cons, and arranged in chronological order. Correspondents include: J.
Roscoe Drummond, John H. Finley, J.D.M. Ford, W. Cameron Forbes, John A. Gade,
and Sumner Welles.

| | | | D. Opal Whiteley,
1915-1966
Arranged chronologically and by subject. The bulk of the materials in this sub-series span 1918 through 1929, with
additional materials continuing through 1959.
The materials relate to the publication of Opal Whiteley's book.
The Story of Opal was serialized in the
Atlantic Monthly from March through August of
1920, and published later that year by G. P. Putnam's Sons. The serials
provoked many queries regarding the diary's authenticity, yet the story
appealed to many people who became enamored of the little girl of the diary.
Whiteley claimed to be the daughter of Prince Henri D'Orleans, and was
allegedly raised by foster parents in an Oregon lumber camp. Belief in her
story was widespread, and she was recognized by her late father's mother, the
Duchess de Chartres. Whiteley adopted the family name, calling herself
Francoise d'Orleans. She toured India as a princess of that country (where she
had lived as a small child with her "real" parents) and was an honored guest
among that country's noble families.
Sedgwick spent years corresponding with people who knew Whiteley to verify
her story, whose authenticity he never renounced. His most extensive
correspondence in this collection was with Whiteley and with Elbert Bede,
publisher of Oregon's Cottage Grove Sentinel.
Bede was his primary research associate on the project.
Sedgwick's correspondence with Whiteley, Bede, and the many people contacted
regarding Whiteley's unusual childhood, are arranged chronologically in Carton
16. Cartons 16 and 17 consist of comments from Atlantic
Monthly readers, arranged alphabetically by year. Other materials in
Carton 17 include correspondence between Sedgwick and Barbara Ward of
The Economist about a fund established to aid
Whiteley who spent her last years in a mental institution; correspondence with
G.P. Putnam's Sons (1920-1921); correspondence with lawyers of
Vanity Fair in 1920; drafts of
The Story of Opal; miscellaneous notes regarding
the manuscript; notes on Whiteley's biography; and assorted printed materials.
There are also folders of newspaper clippings.

| | | | III. Personal Files,
1881-1969
Arranged alphabetically by individual, institution, or subject. This series contains correspondence of a personal nature kept by Sedgwick,
arranged alphabetically by correspondent, institution, or subject of
correspondence. The materials in this series span 1881 to 1969, with the
majority' from Sedgwick's later years at the Atlantic
Monthly (1930s) and the first decade after his retirement (1940s). This
series also contains letters of Catherine Maria Sedgwick (1820s) and C.F.
Sedgwick (1879-1880).
Because Sedgwick established personal relationships with people associated
with his editorship, there is an ambiguous nature to much of his
correspondence. Correspondents for whom there were Atlantic Monthly files were moved unless the contents
of the letters were purely personal, in which case the letters were left in the
Personal Files.
The use of "personal" to describe the contents of this series refers to all
non-Atlantic Monthly interests. Often this may
be a vague distinction. Some, like Brown Brothers & Company, Sedgwick's
stockbrokers, easily belong in this series. Others, such as correspondence with
colleagues regarding membership in various men's clubs, are less clear because
they may have had professional associations with Sedgwick as well. In this
case, the letters are filed chronologically under the name of the club.
Sedgwick's correspondents regarding candidature to the Century Association
include Henry James, Pierre Jay, and Edward Forbes. Sedgwick's own candidature
to England's Athenaeum provoked nominating letters from John Buchan, William
Galsworthy, Elizabeth Haldane, Lord Dunsany, and Henry Newbolt. Sedgwick was
also a member of Boston's Wednesday Evening Club.
The bulk of the correspondence in this series, contained in Cartons 17 and
18, refers to political, literary or personal issues. Sedgwick's professional
advice was sought by many individuals on varied topics.
The series also contains subject files regarding Sedgwick's intervention on
behalf of foreigners seeking assistance in order to leave war-torn Europe.
Included in the file "Czechoslovakia" are letters of introduction used by
Sedgwick in a 1937 trip to that country, and correspondence regarding P.
Dobias, a student who sought asylum in the U.S. in 1939. The
Harding/Hanfstaengl file contains correspondence regarding financial support of
Egon Hanfstaengl, a German student at Harvard. Hanfstaengl, a distant cousin of
Sedgwick, was the son of Hitler supporter Ernst Hanfstaengl, who spent World
War II incarcerated in various concentration camps in England and Canada.
Also included in the Personal Files are correspondence with gardeners, book
dealers, wine and cigar dealers, fund-raisers, and invitations to social
events, none of which have been indexed.
The extensive list of correspondents in this series necessitated a set of
criteria for creation of a selective name index. Correspondents indexed were
chosen based on the number of letters or significant institutional, personal or
professional affiliations. All members of the Sedgwick family were indexed,
including the Rev. Theodore, W. Ellery and William Ellery, R. Minturn Sedgwick,
Marjorie Russell Sedgwick and her daughter, Pamela Russell. Also included in
this series are condolences sent to Mrs. Sedgwick in 1960. Letters of
condolence from people for whom Atlantic Monthly
files existed were moved to those files.
Carton 19 contains an assortment of materials, including essays written by
Sedgwick about countries he visited, such as Greece, Portugal, Sicily, and
Spain. His handwritten journals (travel diaries) of trips to Japan and South
America between 1918 and 1936 are also in this carton. The diaries include
addresses of contacts, daily activities, and impressions. These diaries were
the basis for articles Sedgwick later submitted to the Atlantic Monthly.
Miscellaneous materials in Carton 19 include drafts of a manuscript history
of the Field Family (a Stockbridge, MA, family) and notes on word ciphers
labelled "William Shakespeare."

| | | | IV. Professional Affiliations
Arranged by individual institutions.Sedgwick's professional life was not limited to literary associations. As an
influential figure in Boston, as well as in the literary world, he was asked to
serve on numerous boards. He was a Trustee of the Groton School, located in
Groton, Massachusetts, and the Boston Public Library. He was also an Overseer
of Harvard University. His wife was appointed by Harvard's Board of Overseers
to a special committee to overseer management of the Arnold Arboretum in
Jamaica Plain. In addition, Sedgwick was a part-owner and Vice-President of the
Rumford Press, which printed the Reader's
Digest, among other publications. Included in this series also are
files from his days as an associate editor at Youth's
Companion.
|
| | | | | A. Arnold Arboretum,
1949-1959
This sub-series is contained in Carton 19. The materials include
correspondence, reports, and committee resolutions from 1950 through 1959, in
chronological order.
These records apparently were kept by Marjorie Russell Sedgwick, because it
was she who was a member of the Committee to Visit the Arnold Arboretum. The
Arboretum, established in Jamaica Plain in 1880 as a 500-acre park, became
Harvard's botanical gardens. The park is administered by Harvard University and
the Boston Department of Parks and Recreation.
Mrs. Sedgwick, who was appointed to this committee by the Harvard Board of
Overseers, served during a tense period. In 1953, the corporation which had
been founded to raise money to support the Arboretum challenged Harvard
University for control of the Arboretum. Included are letters from Mrs.
Sedgwick and her husband, and "A Survey of the Controversy," by Professor Karl
Sax.

The following index contains select individuals who corresponded with
Ellery Sedgwick. The names were taken from all parts of the collection except
from the Atlantic Monthly General Files. The
index is presented in two parts: by name of correspondent and by institutional
affiliation.
The index is a select one because of the great number of people with whom
Sedgwick had contact. Individuals were selected for inclusion on the basis of
quantity of correspondence and/or institutional or professional
affiliation.
The correspondence for whom files exist in the Atlantic Monthly General Files are designated in the
index with an asterisk (*) after their names.
This index should be used in conjunction with the
series description and box list. The indexes refer to former box and folder
numbers used prior to the transfer to record cartons for offsite storage. Users
should refer to the new carton and barcode numbers for retrieval from offsite
storage. Both sets of numbers are listed in the box list.

The following is an alphabetical list of those correspondents for whom there
are photocopies of their correspondence found the Atlantic Monthly General Files. This list should be
consulted by the librarian for the letters for which readers should use the
photocopies and not the original letters. Although a correspondent may be
listed here, this does not mean that every letter written by that person has
been photocopied. The librarian should consult the container list for the
AM General Files and the index to find all
correspondence for a given person and those letters should be compared against
the copies to be sure that they have all been copied. If so, only the copies
should be given to the researcher.
The photocopies are in found in the boxes which remain onsite.
