Ezra Stiles Gannett (1801-1871), son of Caleb (1745-1818) and Ruth (Stiles)
Gannett (1765-1808), was a Unitarian minister, editor, and a founder and the
first secretary of the American Unitarian Association. He married Anna Linzee
Tilden (1811-1846) in 1835.
William Channing Gannett (1840-1923), son of Ezra Stiles (1801-1871) and
Anna Linzee (Tilden) Gannett (1811-1846), was a Unitarian minister and a
biographer of his father. He married Mary Thorn Lewis (1854-1952) in 1887.
The Ezra Stiles Gannett papers consist of the personal and religious papers
of Ezra Stiles Gannett, assistant and later pastor of the Federal (later
Arlington) Street Church, 1824-1871, and a leader in the Unitarian movement.
The collection includes loose papers, primarily the correspondence of Ezra
Stiles Gannett and his son William Channing Gannett; sermon notes; diaries and
travel journals, 1821-1871, describing Gannett's ministry, his activities on
behalf of the Unitarian Church, and his travels in Europe in 1836-1838 and
1865; and tributes and obituaries prepared after Gannett's death. Among
Gannett's correspondents are many prominent Unitarians, including William
Ellery Channing (1780-1842), James Freeman Clarke (1810-1888), John Cordner
(1816-1894), Calvin Lincoln (1799-1881), Samuel Joseph May (1797-1871), and
Henry Ware, Jr. (1794-1843). Subjects include church operations, theological
doctrines, Boston social life, slavery, and the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
Gift of Lewis Gannett of Rochester, N.Y., Apr. 1953.
