This collection consists of carte de visite portraits of members of the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, taken during the Civil War.

Collection Description

This collection consists of forty-three carte de visite portraits of members of the 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment of the Civil War, taken from 1862 to ca. 1865. Subjects include Henry Livermore Abbott, Captain William Francis Bartlett, Caspar Crowninshield, Edward N. Hallowell, Norwood Penrose Hallowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., William Raymond Lee, James Jackson Lowell, George Brinton McClellan, Francis Palfrey, William Lowell Putnam, Paul Joseph Revere, John Sedgwick, and Edwin Vose Sumner, among many others. There are also a small number of cartes de visite of members of the 9th Massachusetts Artillery Battery and the 7th Michigan Infantry Regiment. Photographers include James Wallace Black, Frederick L. Lay, and John Adams Whipple of Boston, Mass., as well as Brady's National Photographic Art Gallery of Washington, D.C., among others.
