John Sidney Wyman (b. 1810) married (1st) Lavinia Rogers and (2nd) Maria
Downs (d. 1913). Their children were John (1849-1900) and Franklin Abijah
(alternately Albert) Wyman (1850-1922).
Asaph Churchill (1814-1892), lawyer of Milton, Mass., married (1st) in 1838
Mary Buckminster Brewer (d. 1860) and (2nd) in 1862 Mary Anne Ware (d. 1886).
Among his children with Mary Buckminster Brewer were Gardner Asaph Churchill
(1839-1896); Joseph Richmond Brewer Churchill (1845-1933), judge and first
president of the Massachusetts Cooperative Bank.
Gardner Asaph Churchill, a printer in Boston, Mass., married in 1862 Ellen
Barstow Barrett (b. 1839). Their children were Mary Brewer Churchill
(1864-1929), Asaph Churchill (b. 1867), and Ellen Barrett Churchill (b.
1877).
Franklin A. Wyman (1850-1922), a wool merchant of Boston, Mass., married in
1898 Mary Brewer Churchill (1864-1929). They had one child, Dorothy Churchill
Wyman (1899-1993). Dorothy was a painter who was professionally known as D. C.
Wyman (or, after her marriage, as D. Wyman Martin). She studied at the School
of the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston, Mass. and privately with George
Elmer Browne, with whom she traveled and studied in Europe and Provincetown,
Mass. Her work first received national recognition in 1935 at the annual
exhibition in New York of the Allied Artists of America. She kept a studio at
112 Newbury Street in Boston, Mass. Dorothy Churchill Wyman married ca. 1945
Robert C. Martin (1900-1973), his second marriage. His child by his first
marriage was Dorothy Jane Martin (later Kelly).
The Wyman family photographs contains 578 photographs, both black-and-white
and color, and 319 film photonegatives. One box contains loose Wyman family
photographs not housed in albums. These photographs include formal and informal
portraits of various Wyman, Churchill, and Martin family members, dating from
ca. 1858-1975, and photographs of Wyman, Hildreth, and Churchill family homes.
There are also photographs taken by Franklin A. Wyman of his travels to England
and France in 1897 and his honeymoon in Florida with Mary Brewer Churchill
Wyman ca. 1898, as well as photographs taken by their daughter Dorothy
Churchill Wyman Martin while she was a student at the School of the Museum of
Fine Arts in Boston, Mass. ca. 1919-1923. Additionally, there are also loose
black-and-white and color film photonegatives taken by Dorothy Churchill Wyman
Martin from 1925-1987; some of these negatives may correspond to photos within
the collection.
This collection also contains six albums and scrapbooks of photographs
belonging to Dorothy Churchill Wyman Martin. Due to preservation concerns, MHS
staff disbound these volumes in December 2003 and housed the photographs in one
box. One album, entitled "Winter in California," contains photographs of the
Wyman family's travels across the American West and through California from
Dec. 1924-Apr. 1925. The other five albums are a compilation of snapshot
photographs, clippings, postcards, and photomechanical prints, dating from ca.
1891-1981 and assembled by Dorothy Churchill Wyman Martin. Most of the
photographs were taken by Dorothy Churchill Wyman Martin, and subjects include
various Wyman family members; Wyman family homes in Ashby, Ashmont, and
Concord, Mass.; various friends of Dorothy Churchill Wyman Martin and Robert C.
Martin; Dorothy Churchill Wyman Martin's art studies with George Elmer Browne
in Provincetown, Mass. and Europe; views of Boston, Mass.; and her life and
travels during her marriage to Robert C. Martin. These albums include
photographs taken by Franklin A. Wyman.
This collection includes 1 ambrotype, cartes de visite, tintypes, film
negatives, postcards, and photomechanical prints.
The Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) holds the following collections
