This hand-colored sketch depicting a rich scene of Cheyenne Indians hunting buffalo is the work of Cheyenne warrior Bear's Heart. He was born in 1851 with the tribal name Nock-ko-ist. Bear's Heart was one of many Indians held at Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Fla. after the Red River War. This image is in a book of sketches made by several American Indians while at Fort Marion between 1875 and 1878. After his release from Fort Marion, Bear’s Heart attended the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia and worked as a carpenter on the Cheyenne Arapaho reservation in Oklahoma. He died of tuberculosis in 1882.
