John Quincy Adams Family Silhouettes
Silhouettes by Jarvis F. Hanks, 1829
26 cm x 16.5 cm
Jarvis F. Hanks created these silhouettes of Pres. John Quincy Adams's family in 1829. After suffering defeat in his bid for re-election in 1830, Adams took a brief hiatus in his political career. Shortly after the Adams family left the White House for their home on Meridian Hill, John Quincy Adams noted in his diary, "Mr. Reynolds came with master Hankes who cut me out and all the family in paper. I had my wife and myself; my son John, his wife and their baby, Mary Roberdeau and Abigail S. Adams, all cut out and pasted upon one Card." All are neatly labeled in John Quincy Adams's own hand.
