Research Guide

If you are not sure that the MHS is the right place to start your research or find an answer to your question, this guide to Massachusetts historical research can help you in a number of ways. The Society's reference staff can answer reference questions about the Society's holdings and can assist readers with research strategies, but we recommend that you take some time to look through the options and tips here as you get started.

Where to Begin Your Research
Although the Society's collections are expansive and varied, many research projects may be better served by the resources at other institutions. The Where to Begin Your Research web page includes recommendations and contact information for other libraries, repositories, and historical societies, all of which have particular strengths for the study of Massachusetts history. The listings are grouped into sections on genealogy, local history, military records, and historic sites and homes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Massachusetts History
The Massachusetts History FAQ provides answers to some of the questions most often directed to the Massachusetts Historical Society. Some of the topics addressed to date include Abigail Adams, the Boston Molasses Flood, and the African American Civil War regiment featured in the movie Glory. The answers, prepared by the MHS reference staff, contain brief summaries of the historical events and suggestions for further reading. Click here

Reference Questions
Our reference staff can answer questions about the Society’s holdings, help with research strategies, and provide photocopy services. Please note that while the staff can provide research assistance related to manuscript collections and rare books at the Massachusetts Historical Society, the reference staff cannot survey collections or engage in original or genealogical research for patrons who cannot visit the society.

Before you contact the reference staff we suggest that you investigate our on-line catalog, Abigail, and our on-line finding aids as these resources may provide you with information about collections containing material pertinent to your research.

Please use the Ask a Reference Question form for reference queries, make photocopy requests through the photocopy form, and digital reproduction requests through the image order form. You submit queries via letter, e-mail, fax, or telephone. Address your questions to:
