Phillis Wheatley, the author of this first book of poetry by a black American, was born in West Africa.  The book contains thirty-nine poems.  The frontispiece of this first, London edition of the book, is comprised of an engraving of Wheatley done by Scipio Moorhead, the slave of Rev. John Moorhead.
