The vivienda at Guaimiro in Trinidad, Cuba was originally built by the Cuban sugar planter Borel. When the Trinidad Sugar Company took control of the estate in the 1890s, under the partnership of Atkins, Havemeyer, and Senff, rumor had it that Borel had been murdered by his family, who wished to take possession of money he supposedly buried at Guaimiro. Borel was said to have also killed the slave who dug the hiding-place for the money in order to secure secrecy. No money was ever found buried on the estate, however.
