No. 6 Diary 17 May 1830 31 December 18311

He, that hath passed the day without attention to the task assigned him, may be certain, that the lapse of life has brought him no nearer to his object; for whatever idleness may expect from time, it’s produce will be only in proportion to the diligence with which it has been used.

Adventurer. No. 69.

Titlepage of D/CFA/8 (Adams Papers, Microfilms, Reel No. 60), which begins where D/CFA/5, 2d part, ends and in which are contained all the journal entries CFA made between the terminal dates named on the titlepage. An explanation of the discrepancy between CFA’s numbering of his Diary volumes and the Adams Papers serial numbering appears at vol. 1:xxxvii–xxxviii; see also, above, entry for 4 Sept. 1829, note. For a description of this Diary MS and of the other MSS from which the printed text of vols. 3 and 4 is derived, see the Introduction.
