1. While JQA was Secretary of State, LCA received at weekly (later fortnightly) tea parties, invariably held on Tuesday (see entry for 28 Dec. 1823, below). Usually attended by fifty to one hundred persons, the parties were sometimes enlivened by music and dancing. See JQA’s Diary for a faithful record of the gatherings; also Bemis, JQA, 1:274.
