1. Hugh Nelson (1768–1836), a former Representative from Virginia, who served as American minister to Spain from 1823 to 1824 ( Biog. Dir. Cong. ), and Edward Coles (1786–1868), who was elected governor of Illinois in 1822 and led the fight against legalizing slavery in that state ( DAB ).
