In the drafts, JA preceded the announcement of his commission as minister plenipotentiary to the Netherlands with an account of his appointment as minister to negotiate an Anglo-American peace treaty. The enclosed copy of JA's commission of 29 Dec. 1780 (vol. 10:449) has not been positively identified, but it may be that which is at the South Carolina {p. 282} Historical Society and bears the notation: “Leyden April 19. 1781. A true Copy attest. John Adams.”
