5. Pierre Jeannin mediated the Twelve Years’ Truce of 1609 during the Dutch war with Spain over its independence. Les negociations de M. le President Jeannin, 4 vols. in 2, Amsterdam, 1695, is in the library at MQA. Jean Baptiste Colbert, Marquis de Torcy, was the French foreign minister during negotiations for the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, while Jean Antoine de Mesme, Comte d’Avaux, and Godefroi, Comte d’Estrades, were French ambassadors at The Hague and plenipotentiaries during the negotiations leading to the 1679 Peace of Nijmegen. Torcy’s Mémoires . . . pour servir à l’histoire des négociations depuis le traité de Riswick jusqu’à la paix d’Utrecht, 3 vols., London, 1757; two sets of Avaux’s Négociations de Monsieur le Comte d’Avaux en Holland, depuis 1679, jusqu’en 1688, 6 vols., Paris, 1752–1753, and 6 vols. in 3, Paris, 1754; and two copies of Estrades’ Lettres, mémoires et négociations . . . en Italie, en Angleterre & en Holland, 9 vols., London, 1743, are in JA ’s library at MB (Hoefer, Nouv. biog. générale ; Catalogue of JA ’s Library ).
