1. Hugh Nelson (1768–1836), a former Representative from Virginia, who served as American minister to Spain from 1823 to 1824 (Biog. Dir. Cong.), and Edward Coles (1786–1868), who was elected governor of Illinois in 1822 and led the fight against legalizing slavery in that state (DAB).
