Arose early this morning and commenced writing to my Mother,1
but did not finish my letter before it was time to go to Boston. The weather quite
warm. Went to the Office, finished my letter but did not do much beside. At one o’clock
I rode to Medford and found quite a company collected. The family and no one beside.
Mr. and Mrs. Frothingham and Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Brooks Jr. neither. I was surprised
and at first a little disconcerted as I had not been invited and scarcely expected
it, but having recovered from that, we did tolerably well. I forgot to mention Mrs.
Boott, the mother of Mrs. Edward Brooks, who though not exactly one of the family,
still has some bond of union with it. Evening with Abby.
