is printed in same, p. 789–790. It was signed by Franklin and Jay on that date and
by Laurens and JA
retroactively in 1783. JA
was nettled because he had not been consulted about the appointment, but at Franklin's
request Jay later categorically denied that he (Jay) had been solicited by Franklin
in behalf of his grandson; see Jay to Franklin, 26 Jan. 1783 (same 6:231). See also
