4. In a letter to Chavagnes of 3 March, JA wrote that he had obtained an order from the Farmers General “to mark with lead my Trunks and Boxes, without searching them.” On the same day he wrote to Gerard de Malherbes and Allain, the merchants with whom Chavagnes had left the baggage, informing them of the order from the Farmers General and requesting that when the items had been marked with lead they be sent to him (both LbC, Adams Papers).
