John and Abigail Adams
In 1766, about two years after Abigail Smith married John Adams, Benjamin Blyth of Salem, Mass., drew these pastel portraits. They are the earliest known likenesses of the couple. The Adamses' great-great-grandson John Adams gave them to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1957, augmenting the family's earlier gift of the manuscripts of John and Abigail Adams and their descendants.

54th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry
On May 28, 1863, the 54th Massachusetts, the Union's first African American regiment, left Boston for South Carolina and the war. In their second major engagement the 54th led the assault on Fort Wagner on Morris Island, S.C. Although the assault failed, the regiment's valor at Fort Wagner led directly to the the general recruitment of black troops and a Union victory.
