Look for pages containing your search keywords or phrase:

• Please Note: Although this search tool indexes a transcription of Thomas Jefferson's handwritten manuscript of Notes on the State of Virginia, the transcription itself is not currently visible. Search results will link to the images of the pages that contain the search terms but will not locate exactly where the search terms are on the pages.
• The search tool does not offer automatic stemming, i.e. a search for "rivers" will not return "river".
• A keyword search assumes the AND operator when searching two or more words and as a result links to pages that contain all of the words entered into the search box. (Keyword search does not support OR at this time.)
• The phrase search ignores certain stop words including "and", "the", etc.
• The phrase search does not require terms to be enclosed within quotation marks.
• Some keywords or phrases within the text will not appear as search results if they are split between full-pages and partial-page attachments.
• Search is not case sensitive.
• This search tool indexes both original spellings and regularized spellings. For example, a search for "Mississippi" will link to a page using Jefferson's spelling, "Missisipi." Occasionally this will prompt the search to return duplicate results.
