List of persons to be visited?
4 p.
JA—Miscellaneous Filed with N.D. at end
- In D/JA, [June–July 1785].
- Transcribed for D/JA. To follow [9 or 16] May 1785 (D/JA/43.16).
- Archival Notes: On the reverse of JA's list of visits is the endorsement "Illegal Captures and Complaints of Injuries receiv'd." Handwriting appears to be that of WSS. The endorsement may concern one of two "captures"
- 1) the African American slaves owned by Americans captured by the British at the evacuation of New York, the subject of alleged violation of the 7th article of the treaty, as sent by Lord Carmarthen to JA, 28 Feb. 1786 (Dipl. Corr., 2:640ff.)( 051681), see also JA to John Jay, 25 May 1786, in same, 2:659 ff. (

051950). Relates to British conduct in violation of 22d article of Prelim. Peace. See JA in Boston Patriot, 14 Dec. 1811, p. 1, col. 3.click to view record ID 051950 in a new window/tab.
- or
- 2) U.S. prisoners at Algiers (see JA to John Jay, 31 July 1786, Dipl. Corr., 2:672-673 [ 052194], also Jefferson to Henry, 9 Aug. 1786, Jefferson Papers, ed. Boyd, 10:206-207). Correspondence about both these matters went through JA's hands in 1786. This year seems more likely than 1785, post May, during part of which time WSS was in Berlin; and more likely than 1787 (the affair of the Chinese seamen brought to Europe in U.S. ship Hydrea, as reported by JA 27 Jan. 1787 [Dipl. Corr. 2:732]). Entered by ER 12/07/2015
