But to quit this rude figure, for which, nothing but my connection with sportsmen, or perhaps the military fashions of the times could apologize, let me return to simple style . . . If you think it worth while to give me any hints of the politicks of New York, and dare to do it, I will thank you. . . . Tell Caroline that I advise her: that I bessech her; and if that is not enough: I enjoin it upon her, by the Authority of a Grandfather, not to forget her French. . . ." and to keep a journal: I give that advice to all my grandchildren and great grandchildren of which I have a "pleasant prospect of a plentiful Crop. N.B. conceal this from Caroline. She will be shocked."
