( conjectural )
1815 to 1816
Original paper slip text:[1815 or 1816?]
Draft of a reply to a letter of 15 Dec. 1814* from
John Randolph Jr.
of Roanoke to "lately in the Senate ... from Massachusetts"]29 p. (with note by CFA preceding: "Draught of a reply to John Randolph's taunts, which was left incomplete....")
- *Randolph's letter is printed in Hugh A. Garland, The Life of John Randolph of Roanoke, N.Y., 1853, 2:51–62. The points in JA's present draft show conclusively that they relate to the Randolph letter.
- Archival Notes: Lloyd's reply was printed in the Boston Daily Advertiser, in several installments in Jan. 1815. This draft, probably never published, dates from 1815 or 1816 according to internal evidence. 2nd sheet, p.1 says JA was "out of office 16 years ago," i.e. in 1800; p.2 that JA "almost thirty years ago said to the Queen of England" (i.e. [1786?]). Entered by ER 11/24/2015
- Probably filmed with undated material. Changed from noDate to from 1815 to 1816 based on above rationale. ER 11/24/2015
