3. ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. A.L.s., "J. Q. Adams," 1 p., 8vo, Newbury Port, 28 April 1790. To an unnamed correspondent. Neat repair with clear tape. Written when Adams was but twenty-three and still a law student of Theophilus Parsons at Newburyport. In this fine letter he informs his correspondent of his plans to set up a law office in Boston. His father has offered him "the best room in my house" and Adams quotes extensively from his father's letter on this subject. He gives reasons for believing that he should not take this room, however. He has written to his brother at Cambridge "requesting him to take the necessary steps to procure my master's degree; without putting me to the trouble of going to Cambridge myself." He also requests his correspondent to send him twelve or fifteen pounds to pay his present debts. He has "been obliged to borrow £3 to pay my last month's board. This however is altogether my own fault."
