ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. LS, 4to, 2pp, June 8, 1816. "I have the honour of enclosing two public documents, one of which exhibits the whole amount of the actual expenditures of the Government of the United States during a period of twenty six years from the establishment of the present Constitution to the 31st of March 1815. The other will show you the estimates of appropriations for the service of the present year made by the Secretary of the Treasury who is our Chancellor of the exchequer. . . . I cannot speak with certainty of the amount of the expenses of the several State Governments, but I am very confident that the whole aggregate of them does not exceed one Million of Dollars, the greatest part of which goes to the payment of the Members of the State Legislatures. . . . At the 20th and following pages of the Volume which I likewise enclose a statement is exhibited of the annual expenses of the State of New York one of the largest and most opulent and the most populous State of the Union."
