"Yesterday I received the despatches from Spain, brought by Mr. Fenwick; copies of which had been transmitted to you—and yesterday the enclosed letter from the French Minister Mr. De Neuville was delivered to me by a special messenger whom he despatched with it from New York. I pray to be favoured with your instructions, what answer to return to it . . . Mr. Neuville appears to be very anxious, with regard to the State of our Relations with Spain and will remain here or proceed to France as you may think his agency may be most useful here or there to the preservation of Peace. As the Spanish confidential person who is to come and ask explanations may shortly be expected; would it not be advisable to suggest to him . . . to postpone his proposed voyage to France . . ."
