In Papers of Alexander Hamilton, Vol. 32; true copy of copy (authenticated by Charles Scribner, May 6th, 1844)
"Receipt of McHenry's ltr. of the 20th. Adams's opinion unchanged on the relative ranks oft he Major Generals. Belief that ultimately the ranking would have to be Knox-Pinckney-Hamilton. Expression of sympathy with McHenry and family in their sickness as Mrs. Adams had been on the point of death and was still extremely weak."
