Abstract

This collection consists of collections of anonymous notes taken during sermons of various clergymen in New England, 1647-1831.

Collection Description

This collection consists of collections of anonymous notes taken during sermons of various clergymen in New England, 1647-1831. Included are notes on the sermons of Revs. [William] Hubbard of Ipswich, Mass.; [Solomon] Stoddard of Northampton, Mass.; [Samuel] Torrey of Weymouth, Mass.; and Revs. Allen, Ash, Crosse, Danforth, Eliot, Love, Mather, Norwell, Roberts, and Will[ard], among other unidentified clergymen; and sermons delivered in various towns in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Maine, including a series of sermons preached in Ponkapoag (now part of Canton, Mass.).

Acquisition Information

Collection III. Anonymous lecture sermons, 1677-1684, was a gift of Henry Channing, Oct. 1836. Collection V. Notes on sermons by various clergymen, 1679-1680, was a gift of N. L. Frothingham, Dec. 1845. Collection VI. Notes on sermons by various clergymen, 1682, was a gift of Henry A. Miles, Sep. 1836.

This collection is arranged chronologically in twelve "collections" based on author's handwriting and donor information. Old shelf numbers and former collection names, when applicable, are included in the Detailed Description of the Collection below.

Collection I. Notes on sermons by various clergymen, 1647-1648

This anonymous notebook contains notes on sermons delivered by various clergymen, including Revs. Ash, Crosse, Love, and Roberts, among others.

Collection II. Sermon notebook, 1656-1657

This notebook contains notes on religious and Biblical themes and was most likely used by a clergyman to prepare sermons. Included are some passages in Greek.

This small notebook contains lecture sermons by an unidentified clergyman and includes passages in Greek.

Collection VII. Unidentified sermons, 1694-1781

Included are various handwritten sermons by unidentified clergymen on topics such as society, virtue, and Biblical passages, including Hosea and Zechariah. Many of the sermons are undated. Formerly cataloged as "Early sermons."

Collection VIII. Sermon notebooks, 1747-1748

These two small notebooks contain sermons written by an unidentified clergyman and include the date and topic of each sermon.

Collection IX. Sermons preached in Massachusetts, 1766-1773

Included are handwritten copies of sermons written by an unidentified clergyman and delivered in various places in Massachusetts, including Bradford, Byfield, Chester, Deerfield, Dover, Haverhill, Kingston, and Newbury. Many of the sermons are undated.

Collection X. Sermons preached in New England, 1794

Included are handwritten sermons by an unidentified clergyman, delivered in Amesbury, Byfield, Hamilton (1 Jan. 1794), Mendon, and Uxbridge, Mass.; Colchester and Litchfield, Conn.; and Sandown, N.H. Formerly cataloged as "Early sermons."

Collection XI. Sermons preached in New England, 1796-1831

Included are handwritten sermons by an unidentified clergyman, delivered in various places in New England. A series of sermons was delivered in Ponkapoag (now Canton), Mass., 1806-1814, and others were delivered in East Haddam, Haddam, Killingworth, Middlebury, North Haven, North Killingworth, Saybrook, West Haven, and Westbrook, Conn.; Chester, Fairhaven, Mansfield, and Westford, Mass.; Carmel, [Me.]; and Hollis, [N.H.] Formerly cataloged as "Misc. sermons."
