Abstract
This collection consists of autograph letters and cut-slip autographs written to or collected by James Schouler and tipped into a volume.
Biographical Sketch
James Schouler was born in Arlington, Mass. in 1839, the son of William Schouler (1814-1872), a journalist and Massachusetts politician, and his wife Frances Eliza (Warren) Schouler. James Schouler graduated from Harvard College in 1859 and was admitted to the Boston bar in 1862. He practiced law and was a lecturer at the Boston University School of Law and Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his legal practice, Schouler was a historian and served as president of the American Historical Association from 1896 to 1897. He died in Intervale, N.H. in 1920.
Collection Description
This collection consists of autograph letters and cut-slip autographs, primarily written to James Schouler or his father William, collected by James, and tipped into a volume. Correspondents include U.S. presidents, politicians, military leaders, and other prominent Americans. Also included are a few handwritten notes by Schouler on his History of the United States of America.
