Abstract

This collection consists of the records of the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem Church, 1816-2018, including administrative records, membership and vital records, service organization and club records, religious education records, financial records, property records, pew records, correspondence, program and event records, church publications, worship materials, church and family histories, and material pertaining to Theophilus Parsons (1797-1882), Cambridge Society of the New Jerusalem, and Brookline Society of the New Jerusalem.

Historical Sketch

The Boston Society of the New Jerusalem (BSNJ) traces its origin to 1784, when two of its founding members attended a lecture by James Glen on the teachings of 18th-century Swedish theologian Emanuel Swedenborg at the Green Dragon Tavern in Boston, Mass. In 1818, the 12 founding members agreed to transition from private to public meetings, and on 15 August 1818, the society was established. Thomas Worcester served as lay leader until he became pastor in 1821. The society was incorporated by the Massachusetts legislature in 1823.

The group worshipped in various places throughout Boston, including a hall on Pond Street (now Bedford Street), Boylston Hall, and Pantheon Hall. In 1844, the society grew too numerous, and a church was built at its present location on Bowdoin Street in Beacon Hill, giving the church its colloquial name, Church on the Hill.

The original Gothic-style building stood from its completion in 1845 to 1964, when the high cost of maintenance and declining membership resulted in the decision to tear down the building and replace it with one that would generate more revenue. The new building would be 18 stories high and house 146 apartments. BostonView Corporation was established (in Delaware) to hold title to and manage this real estate. The church reopened on 18 September 1966. Rev. George McCurdy became the new pastor a year later.

In the early 1980s, members of the BNSJ left to form their own society called the Boston Society of the General Church of the New Jerusalem (now New Church of Concord). In 2003, the society separated from the Massachusetts Association of the New Jerusalem, which meant it also separated from the General Convention of the New Jerusalem. The BSNJ now operates as an independent church.

On 2 May 2013, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided the church, taking many of its records for an investigation into criminal activity occurring within the BSNJ by several members since 2003. In October 2014, church member Edward J. Mackenzie, a member since 2002, pleaded guilty to numerous crimes, including racketeering, mail fraud, and money laundering. He also stole church records, rare books, and artifacts and sold them for profit. The records seized by the FBI for evidence were returned to the BSNJ in November 2017 and are currently being reviewed by a lawyer.

Rev. Kevin Baxter and Rev. Colin Leitch are the current pastors of the BSNJ. The congregation is presently comprised of approximately 65 members.

A. Ladies' Aid Association records, 1874-2002

Arranged chronologically.

This subseries consists of the records of the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem's Ladies' Aid Association (LAA), which was formed in 1861 when Catherine (Clark) Reed and Selina Cranch (Minot) Clark called upon the governor of Massachusetts, John Albion Andrew, and expressed their desire to help American Civil War relief efforts. The LAA, formed by the women of the church "for the purpose of furnishing articles which are needed for the health and comfort of the soldiers," was officially recognized by the Church Committee on 16 November 1862. After the war, the LAA continued their charitable endeavors. They stopped meeting in 1991 because of "declining membership and health." The Memorial Fund of the Ladies' Aid Association was established soon after.

The subseries contains meeting minutes, reports, member lists, treasurer's books, bank books, receipts, notes, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera. Also included are records of organizations related to the LAA, such as the Boston New Church Sewing Society, or Ladies' Sewing Circle, which was also formed in 1861 (it is unclear if this was the earliest incarnation of the LAA) and whose by-laws were finalized in 1874. The subseries also contains interfiled records of the National Alliance of New Church Women, as well as collected New-Church Messenger articles related to Swedenborgian women's charitable organizations.

VIII. Church publications, 1883-2018

This series consists of church manuals and newsletters, pastoral letters, church calendars, and information pamphlets and guides.

A. Church manuals and newsletters, 1883-2018

Arranged chronologically.

This subseries contains Boston Society of the New Jerusalem manuals and newsletters, which generally include personalia, pastoral letters, notices of upcoming church events and activities, brief updates from committees and service organizations, and photographs. Manuals and newsletters were usually issued monthly, with the exception of a single issue for the church's summer hiatus (June, July, and August). From 1934 to 1938, manuals were issued weekly and included orders of Sunday service. In 1939, the manual was briefly titled "Beacon Hill Chimes." The manual was referred to as the newsletter beginning in 1992. In 2018, "manual" was again adopted to celebrate the church's bicentennial. Some manuals contain handwritten notes and corrections.
