Biographical Sketches

Below are biographies of select individuals represented in the collection.

George Partridge Bullard (1857-1928)

George Partridge Bullard, the son of Susan (Partridge) (1824-1908) and Emerson Newell Bullard (1820-1906), was born on 25 June 1857 in West Medway, Massachusetts. As a young man, Bullard worked as a clerk in a hardware business, and later with Bacon & Company, an iron and steel dealership, where he became partner in 1886. In 1891, he established his own steel business, G. P. Bullard & Company (from 1893 Bullard & Post), and later organized and served as president and treasurer of the Eastern Expanded Metal Company. He continued as president when that company consolidated with the Penn Metal Company in 1915.

On 3 June 1908, Bullard was arrested as part of an alleged conspiracy called the "Boston agreement," in which officers of iron and steel firms were accused of defrauding the city of Boston in contract bids by suppressing competition and inflating prices. The case against him was dismissed in 1910 due to lack of evidence.

Bullard served on the Newton Common Council in 1894 and the Board of Alderman the following year. From 1901 to 1902, he represented Newton in the Massachusetts legislature, including as chairman on the House Committee on Railroads. He was one of a close network of supporters, called "The Faithful Ten," that helped to get John Wingate Weeks elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1904. Bullard was also president of the West Newton Savings Bank, the U.S. Electric Signal Company, and the American Electrical Tool Company; director of the First National Bank of West Newton, Beacon Trust Company, Federal Mutual Liability Insurance Company, Robert B. Brigham Hospital, and Eastern Bridge & Structural Company of Worcester; and chairman of the Board of Public Trustees of the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway.

George P. Bullard married Nina Frances Jenks on 3 May 1881, and they had three daughters. He died on 17 April 1928 in a fall from the seventh floor of the Hotel Braemore on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. The fall was ruled a suicide. Bullard may have been experiencing dementia for some time before his death.

Nina Frances (Jenks) Bullard (1859-1930)

Malvina "Nina" Frances Jenks, the oldest child of Clara (Merithew) (1834-1875) and Henry Ray Jenks (1831-1909), was born on 29 December 1859 in Norwood, Massachusetts. Her younger siblings were: Clifton Henry Jenks (1861-1957), Charles Lincoln Jenks (1865-1900), Isaac Colburn Jenks (1867-1931), Katie Maria Jenks (1869-1878), and Frank Lyman Jenks (1872-1890). Nina graduated in 1877 from Dean Academy (now Dean College) in Franklin, Massachusetts. On 3 May 1881, she married George Partridge Bullard, and they had three daughters. She was an officer in the West Newton Women's Educational Club, a member of the Lucy Jackson Chapter of the D.A.R., and active in Unitarian circles. She delivered many lectures about her travels and other subjects, including to the Journey Club. She died 1 April 1930.

Nina Bullard was visiting Europe--specifically Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, and England--with her friend Annie A. Whidden when World War I broke out in 1914. Some of her letters home about the situation were published in Boston newspapers.

Note: Although Nina (Jenks) Bullard's legal first name was "Malvina," she almost exclusively used "Nina," so "Nina" has been used throughout this guide.

Charles Emelius Lauriat, Sr. (1842-1920)

Charles Emelius Lauriat, Sr., the son of Emelius Anselm Lauriat (1810-1858) and Martha (Foster) Lauriat (1814-1886), was born in Boston on 12 January 1842. He worked in the bookselling business from the age of 13, first at the bookstore of William Veazie and later William H. Piper & Co., where he rose to the position of manager. In 1872, he and Dana Estes founded Estes & Lauriat, "a general bookselling, publishing and importing business." That firm dissolved in 1898, and Lauriat took over the retail department, founding the Charles E. Lauriat Co. He served as president of the business until his death, when his son succeeded him. During his career, Lauriat, Sr. made many trans-Atlantic trips to purchase books from abroad, particularly London. He was also a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and other organizations, and he sat on the board of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company.

Charles E. Lauriat, Sr. married Harriet Fidelia Page (1847-1935) on 13 November 1867, and the couple had three children: Susanne Foster (Lauriat) Lane (1869-1965), Charles Emelius Lauriat, Jr. (1874-1937), and Blanche (Lauriat) Chandler Manson (1881-1944). The family had a summer home called Breezy Knoll on Squirrel Island in Maine. Charles, Sr. died on 12 February 1920.

Charles Emelius Lauriat, Jr. (1874-1937)

Charles Emelius Lauriat, Jr., the son of Charles Emelius Lauriat, Sr. and Harriet Fidelia (Page) Lauriat, was born on 4 August 1874 in Swampscott, Massachusetts. He studied in the U.S. and abroad, including at Franklin College in Dresden, Germany; was an accomplished yachtsman and swimmer; and worked at Estes & Lauriat and later Charles E. Lauriat Co. in Boston. He established, with his father, a monthly catalog of new books called the Lauriat's Book Review, as well as other catalogs. After his father's death in 1920, Charles, Jr. became president of Charles E. Lauriat Co.

Charles, Jr. made frequent trips abroad to collect rare books, first editions, prints, engravings, and other collectibles. He was traveling first class on the R.M.S. Lusitania when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland on 7 May 1915. Charles survived, taking command of one of the life rafts and helping to rescue 32 other people as the ship sank. He described his experiences in his book The Lusitania's Last Voyage (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1915).

Charles E. Lauriat, Jr. married Marian Isabel Bullard on 20 March 1912, and they had five children. He died on 28 December 1937 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Marian Isabel (Bullard) Lauriat (1882-1961)

Marian "Peggy" Isabel Bullard, the daughter of Nina (Jenks) and George Partridge Bullard, was born on 25 February 1882 in West Newton, Massachusetts. She was educated in Boston, England, and Italy and traveled widely in Europe and Asia. On 20 March 1912, she married Charles Emelius Lauriat, Jr. When he died in 1937, Marian took over as president of Charles E. Lauriat Co., his bookselling business, until it was sold in 1947.

Marian and Charles had five children: Natalie Lauriat (1913-1913); George Bullard Lauriat (1915-1970), who became an attorney and married Dorothy Ann Crounse (1922-2014); Charles "Peter" Emelius Lauriat III (1917-2004), who married Nancy McLean (1921-2019); Nathaniel Page Lauriat (1922-2004); and Patience Lauriat (1928-1989), who became a demographer and was married to James Emery Simon (1923-1991) from 1949 to 1953. Marian died in Hull, Massachusetts, on 10 January 1961.

Note: Marian (Bullard) Lauriat's first name is spelled inconsistently in legal documents and in her personal papers, including by herself. It is spelled "Marion" on her birth certificate, and she and her family used that spelling during her childhood. At some point, she began using "Marian" and eventually used the latter spelling almost exclusively. "Marian" has been used throughout this guide for consistency.

Clara Merithew (Bullard) Jaynes (1884-1980)

Clara "Cherry" Merithew Bullard, the daughter of Nina (Jenks) and George Partridge Bullard, was born on 11 December 1884 in West Newton, Massachusetts. As a young woman, she frequently sang in concerts, operettas, and other performances in West Newton. From 1903 to 1905, she attended the National Park Seminary for Young Women in Forest Glen, Maryland, where she was a member of the Zeta Eta Theta sorority. She married Rev. Julian Clifford Jaynes (1854-1922) on 12 September 1917, and they had three children: Helen E. (Jaynes) Bryant (1918-1970), Julian Clifford Jaynes, Jr. (1920-1997), and Robert Bullard Jaynes (1921-1997). Rev. Jaynes was minister of the First Unitarian Church in West Newton for 37 years. After he died, Clara edited a volume of his sermons titled Magic Wells. She died 2 November 1980 in Keppoch, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Martha Frances Metcalf (1853-1937)

Martha "Mattie" Frances Metcalf, the daughter of Mary Fisher (Bullard) Metcalf (1825-1866) and John Metcalf (1820-1884), was the first cousin of George Partridge Bullard. Martha graduated from the Framingham Normal School in 1876 and worked as a teacher at the Clarke Institution for Deaf-Mutes (later the Clarke School for the Deaf), 1878-1883; the Horace Mann School for the Deaf, 1884-1887; and the Mount Airy School for the Deaf in Philadelphia, 1893-1903. She also tutored privately from 1888-1892 and 1904-1910. Later in life, she lived at Llewsac Lodge, a rest home in Bedford, Massachusetts. She died on 6 August 1937.

Rev. Nathaniel Page Lauriat (1922-2004)

Nathaniel "Nat" Page Lauriat, the son of Marian (Bullard) and Charles Emelius Lauriat, Jr., was born 22 March 1922 in West Newton, Massachusetts. He earned an A.B. from Harvard University in 1943, a Bachelor of Divinity from Meadville Theological School at the University of Chicago in 1945, and a Doctor of Divinity from Meadville-Lombard in 1972. He served as minister of the First Unitarian Church of San Jose, California, 1945-1951; Unitarian Church of Northampton, Massachusetts, 1951-1956; Church of Our Father, Unitarian, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1956-1963; Unitarian Society of Hartford, Connecticut, 1963-1985; and the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Sun Cities in Arizona, 1985-1995.

On 16 June 1945, Lauriat married Jane Vollans Welch (1920-1995), the daughter of Universalist minister George Hosea Welch (1889-1986) and Beatrice Catharine (Van Dreser) Welch. Nathaniel and Jane had three children: Anne Stuart Lauriat (1946-), Sarah (Lauriat) Marx (1949-2022), and Margaret Gray Lauriat (1952-1982). Nathaniel died of cancer in Sedona, Arizona, on 22 February 2004.

Rena Struggles (1885-1981)

Cecerina "Rena" Victoria Struggles was born in London, England, on 9 June 1885, the daughter of carpenter James Struggles (1861-1933) and Ida (Berger) Struggles (1861-1940). She traveled to the United States for the first time when she was 20 years old. She worked as a housekeeper and nurse for several families in the U.S. and England, including that of Marian and Charles E. Lauriat, Jr., whose children she looked after for several years. When she was back in England, she corresponded frequently with the Lauriats, especially Marian. Rena worked until she was 82, but was bed-bound later in life due to severe arthritis. She died on 23 June 1981.

Rena Struggles was living in London, Bath, and Brighton, England, during World War II. On 16 November 1940, during the London Blitz, her family home in the Queen's Park area was bombed, and her mother Ida was killed. Other family members were trapped in the rubble for several hours but survived.

Note: Although Rena Struggles's legal first name was "Cecerina," she almost exclusively used "Rena," so "Rena" has been used throughout this guide.

The next ten volumes consist of seven pocket diaries, one each for the years 1899 to 1905, and three line-a-day diaries kept from 1906-1910, 1911-1915, and 1916 (with a few entries from 1935). Entries in these diaries describe Marian's daily activities in West Newton, again in Neuilly-sur-Seine (in 1901), and on various trips. Many entries mention her parents, her sister Clara Bullard (later Jaynes), and her husband Charles E. Lauriat, Jr. Also included are four folders of select loose pages from weekly and monthly calendars with brief notes about Marian's activities, 1904-1905, 1924-1927, 1930-1937. The last two diaries contain very brief entries about trips taken in 1953 and 1955. Both are mostly blank.

B. Clara Augustus (Merithew) Jenks scrapbooks, 1863-1874, undated

Arranged chronologically.

Clara (Merithew) Jenks (1834-1875) was the mother of Nina (Jenks) Bullard and the first of the three wives of Henry Ray Jenks (1831-1909), who kept a general store.

According to a note in the collection written by Marian Lauriat, these two scrapbooks were compiled by her maternal grandmother Clara (Merithew) Jenks. They include poems, household recipes and tips, and miscellaneous articles clipped from newspapers and pasted into manuscript volumes. Both volumes were originally memoranda or ledger books, probably belonging to Henry Ray Jenks. Some memoranda and accounts from 1870-1871 are visible.

C. Frank Lyman Jenks personal papers, 1874-1918

Arranged chronologically.

Frank Lyman Jenks (1872-1890) was the youngest sibling of Nina (Jenks) Bullard. He graduated from Newton High School in June 1890 and died of an intestinal obstruction on 29 November 1890. Some of the papers in this collection, as well as other records, refer to him as Lyman Frank Jenks. It is unclear which name is correct, but Frank Lyman Jenks has been used throughout this guide.

This subseries consists primarily of five volumes of Frank Lyman Jenks, including two autograph books. The first autograph book, 1877-1890, contains the signatures of Louisa May Alcott; Charles Dickens; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; William Hickling Prescott; Alfred, Lord Tennyson; and John Townsend Trowbridge, as well as family members and friends at Franklin, Massachusetts, with poems and personal messages. The second autograph book, 1889-1890, is inscribed "L. Frank Jenks / Xmas 1889 / From B.A.T." and includes signatures of friends and family and sketches of pigs. The subseries also contains a scrapbook, most likely compiled by Jenks, with printed jokes, poems, illustrations, and stories, many from Puck magazine, pasted into an account book probably kept by his father Henry Ray Jenks; an unidentified volume that is mostly blank, with pages removed, except for an inscription on the inside cover; and a list of books, possibly written by Jenks, with loose sheets by Nina Bullard in 1918 listing "additions in the last two years."
