Abstract
This collection consists of medals struck in England to commemorate Admiral Edward Vernon's naval battles in the Caribbean.
Historical Sketch
The medals in this collection commemorate battles fought by the British Navy led by Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) against Spanish possessions in the Caribbean between November 1739 and April 1741 (part of the wider Anglo-Spanish War, 1739-1748). Also known as the War of Jenkins' Ear, this conflict had its origin in April 1731 when Robert Jenkins, captain of the British brig Rebecca, had part of his ear severed by Spanish coast guards searching his ship for contraband. Eight years later, British politicians used the incident to incite support for a war against Spain, hoping to improve their trading (and slaving) opportunities in the Caribbean.
As support for the war grew, Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), then a member of Parliament, was recalled to naval duty and given command of a squadron of six ships assigned to Jamaica. He vowed to take Portobelo (Panama) with "six ships only" and succeeded on 21 November 1739. When word got back to Britain, national pride at having defeated the Spanish swelled and British toy and button makers began to make medals commemorating the victory. Vernon's success in the Caribbean would not last, however.
Vernon next planned to take the port of Cartagena de Indias with a fleet of 195 ships and approximately 30,000 men. The port was ably defended by Spanish Admiral Blas de Lezo, and the British, suffering heavy losses, were ultimately forced to retreat. One would not know this from the medals, however. After an initial Spanish retreat, Vernon had sent a messenger to inform King George of the British forces' entry to the inner bay. As the good (although erroneous) news reached England, more medals were produced in commemoration of this "victory."
After the defeat at Cartagena, the British forces decided to move against Cuba. Vernon captured Guantánamo Bay and planned to march on Santiago de Cuba, but finally abandoned the attempt as sickness decimated the troops. Ever optimistic about Vernon's chances, however, British manufacturers had created three medals that celebrate the non-existent battle and victory at Havana. By the end of 1742, Vernon had returned to England and the theater of war moved back to the European mainland.

Collection Description
This collection consists of medals at the Massachusetts Historical Society related to Admiral Edward Vernon's naval campaigns during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Medals celebrate Vernon's victory at Portobelo, Panama, as well as victories at Cartagena des Indias and Havana that never happened. In addition to Admiral Vernon, the medals depict other political, military, and naval figures, including Commodore Charles Brown, John Campbell, Duke of Argyll, Nicholas Haddock, Spanish admiral Blas de Lezo, Sir Chaloner Ogle, Robert Walpole, and Thomas Wentworth.
Arrangement Note
The Vernon medals have been organized into eight categories, according to the scheme devised by John W. Adams and Fernando Chao in their Medallic Portraits of Admiral Vernon. Because the medals are distinguished by extremely subtle differences, we have added a "Diagnostics" field for each medal containing the points that differentiate it. The Vernon medals have been described and enumerated in a number of books (see "Sources" above), so the reference numbers have been given for the medal in each source.
Acquisition Information
Except for a few individual pieces, whose provenance is noted in the description, the Vernon medals in our collection were acquired at various times from William Sumner Appleton (1905), Malcolm Storer (1920s?), and Leander McCormick-Goodheart (1940s or 50s?). Unless specifically noted, the provenance of individual medals is not known.

VII. Cartagena medals
Medals in this series commemorate a victory that wasn't. After bombarding the city, the depleted British were forced to withdraw, but the messenger had already been sent back to England with news of British victory. Many depict Spanish Admiral Blas de Lezo in a subservient pose, which could not have been farther from the truth.
