This collection consists of 37 portrait photographs of prominent American and British authors and statesmen, collected by Benjamin Whitwell to accompany his autograph collection.
Collection Description
This collection consists of 37 portrait photographs of prominent American and British authors and statesmen, collected by Benjamin Whitwell to accompany his autograph collection. The photographs, primarily cartes de visite, were taken ca. 1858-1892, and photographers include James Wallace Black of Boston, Mass., among others. Also included is an engraving of Ulysses S. Grant.

The collection is arranged alphabetically.
Acquisition Information
These photographs were removed from the Benjamin Whitwell autograph collection, which was given to the Massachusetts Historical Society by Miss Gertrude Townsend, Oct. 1962.
