Abstract
This collection consists of photographs of members of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati.
Historical Sketch
The Society of the Cincinnati was formed in 1783 by veterans of the American Revolution to perpetuate the friendships they had developed during the war and to promote its patriotic ideals. The general officers and one officer from each regiment first met on 10 May 1783, and the society was officially established three days later as the "Institution" was proposed, revised, and carried into effect. The society took its name from the historical Roman figure, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. George Washington served as its first president, Henry Knox as secretary, and Alexander McDougall as treasurer.
Initially, members were required to have served three years in the army, resigned with honor after three years as an officer, or been placed on inactive duty by a resolution of Congress. In 1854, eligibility requirements were broadened to include officers who had: 1) served three years in the army; 2) died while in service; 3) served in the Continental Army; 4) or been transferred into a reserve unit. This change is referred to as the Rule of 1854. Membership follows a direct male-descent line from the "propositus," or originating member. The general society meets every three years, or whenever deemed necessary by the presiding officers.
The general society was divided into state branches, which met regionally and sent delegates to the triennial general meetings. The Massachusetts chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati was founded on 9 June 1783. The society remains active today, and meetings are still held in Boston.
